Infrastructure as Code: Pipelines & Good Practices (EN)

Making computers design their own tests and fixes (EN)

What if your software could test itself? And what if it could not only find the bugs, but also suggest ways to fix the underlying code?

In his keynote, Mark will tell us about Sapienz, a system for automated test case design using Search Based Software Engineering (SBSE). With this approach, which tests through the user interface (UI), Facebook is pushing test automation into the design of tests as well as their execution.

Sapienz has been deployed at Facebook since October 2017 to design test cases, localise and triage faults to developers and to monitor their fixes. It is now used on a daily basis to test millions of lines of code in Facebook’s Android app. Since August 2018, the system has also been automating the process of suggesting fixes for some of these faults.

Mark Harman

Mark Harman is an engineering manager at Facebook London, where he manages the Sapienz team, working on Search Based Software Engineering (SBSE) for automated test case design and fault fixing. Sapienz has been deployed to continuously test Facebook’s Android and iOS apps, leading to thousands of bugs being automatically found and fixed (mostly by developers, but more recently, some of these faults have also been automatically fixed by Sapienz). The software tackled by Sapienz consists of tens of millions of lines of code; apps that are among the largest and most complex in the app store and that are used by over a billion people worldwide every day for communication, social networking and community building.

Mark is also a part time professor of Software Engineering in the Department of Computer Science at University College London, where he directed the CREST centre for ten years (2006-2017) and was Head of Software Systems Engineering (2012-2017). He is known for his scientific work on SBSE, source code analysis, software testing, app store analysis and empirical software engineering. He was the co-founder of the field SBSE, which has grown rapidly with over 1,700 scientific publications from authors spread over more than 40 countries. SBSE research and practice is now the primary focus of his current work in both the industrial and scientific communities. In addition to Facebook itself, Mark’s scientific work is also supported by an ERC advanced fellowship grant and by the UK EPSRC funding council.

Better, Faster, Stronger - Delivering High Quality Products (EN)

Did you know you can enable your team to build better software faster while having a stronger team culture? Working with various diverse teams across multiple projects, Finn realised that testing doesn’t actually improve software quality. In order to actually improve we must get involved into much more than simply testing and think about the product as a whole. In this session, Finn will share specific examples of how engaging with the business, engineering, process optimisation as well as the entire crossfunctional team can lead to significant improvements in the product’s quality.

Finn Lorbeer

He strongly believes in the benefits of truly agile environments to achieve this goal. He wants to share some of the ideas and concepts his team developed while working on different projects throughout ThoughtWorks Germany.

Continuous Integration Testing for Mobile Application (DE)

Web Application Firewall in DevOps (DE)

How to Help Testers and Developers Work Together in Harmony (EN)

One of the biggest challenges for test managers and project leadership is how to avoid the typical miscommunications between testers and developers. Despite best efforts, we often find that assumptions, team processes and even choice of language can create friction and frustration between developers and testers. This session will discuss the roots of the communication disconnects and provide practical strategies for enabling harmonious, productive teams, with examples taken from actual client situations. The session will include a discussion what ‚done‘ and ‚happy path‘ really means.

Reliability in a world of endless surprise (EN)

Our systems are too big, too complex, and change too quickly to understand them completely. Emergent phenomena elude prediction, even with perfect knowledge. Determinism is an appealing but fundamentally flawed way of thinking about complex systems and is progressively being rejected by natural sciences as well. Instead of chasing an ever-more-perfect mental model, we are better served by embracing ambiguity and surprise. This leads to investing in isolation, ad-hoc debugging and recovery instead of preventing errors or investing in curated dashboards. It also means shifting our language from „root causes“ to a more nuanced view of contributory factors. In this talk, I will tell the story of how thinking about knowledge and cause and effect has evolved in philosophy of science over time and how our field’s developing notions of reliability mirror this evolution but are quite a bit behind. By learning from other fields, we can advance our profession without having to re-discover the same truths from scratch. Finally, I will show how making the shift to rapid recovery for reliability purposes happens to also be the most economic approach to balancing innovation with reliability.

DevOps - What we thought it was and where we are today (DE)

How we fail and keep on trying (EN)

We have moved from a classic “development workshop” company focusing on body-leasing to a solution provider. In parallel we started the transformation from a classic organized company claiming to do agile, to a company with flat hierarchies trying to do agile and are now working hard to actually become agile and implement SAFe and DevOps – as a whole organization and not only in our development teams. Where are we now? What did we achieve and how did we benefit from it? Are we done yet? All these will be covered in our talk with the goal to give others inspiration and motivation to start and finish the journey.
